Who is Gunter?

For the ghosts visiting my site you might have noticed the arrival of a couple of comics I’ve incorporated into the site. They’re probably not going to be the usual fare of my site, mostly I’ve used those as a way to test the functionality of the site when I set up several (here two…) comics there. Why use real (albeit old and rather shaby) comics of mine? Well for testing it felt better to use real comics I drew rather than some pictures I found around, and maybe , just maybe I’ll let them be around on the site.

So who is Gunter? (or Gunther depending or I add the “h” in his name or not). It’s a character I came up with in my college years, a rather loser intellectual antihero who do nothing much in life, but moan a lot about it and make even more bad decisions. Never recognizing his misadventures are his own fault , he will allays punch himself on the chest complaining about the cruelty of the universe and getting in even more troubles. He is rather stressed, unsure of himself and quite unsavory because of his ego, more egoist than mean, he is actually nicer than he appears to be. I’ve always liked drawing about antiheroes, partly to make myself feel better of my life, although there are some things that are actually inspirited from my own life (albeit highly dramatised in Gunter…).

For a time I worked a lot with Gunter , but like many of my creations I have theorized more about him than I have drawn, the first thing I came up was his name, his rather nondescript appearance was made so he would be easy to draw , all the way to his hair (light so I don’t have to darken it when I draw). I actually inked Gunter with a pencil , which I found out was a lot of work, and he was my last comic where I used this technic as I now pencil my comics with a wacom and photoshop.

I ended drawing Gunter shortly after I got my master at university and continued on other stuff, I shortly tried to write a novel about him, but it didn’t stick either. A friend of mine is a big fan of him, not sure why, but I would say that although I cannot say for sure I will never get back to Gunther , it’s probable.

I am steadily working on setting up the site and learning the functionality of WordPress\Comicpress anew. Things have evolved a lot since my last installation, but mostly I steadily find my way into the system, trying not to install too many plugins and widgets to not increase the complication of the site too much.

One big different from my last site is that this installation won’t be a multisite blog. The chapter system Comicpress is been built upon make it possible to simulate different comics on the blog without tinkering with the core processes, which suit me just fine.  However it reduce the ability to change the apparence of the different part of the blog, like the comics background . I know it’s possible , but I couldn’t be bothered to use the time to work it out, a different banner for each comic will have to do!

The blog will consist of three parts:

  • The front page which will function as … well the main page to the portal, with big annoncements and a little presentation of the site.
  • The comics, each will have their own chapter and can be accessed easily from the menu on the site
  • The blog (here) here I will write about the day to day life of administering a comic blog, as well as announcements about the comics .

All in all the changes I’m making on the theme are rather minor (few lines of css) .I’ll probably spend more time to learn the ropes of the system than doing big changes in it. When I’m done setting up the structural part of the blog, I don’t plan to use much time for the design. I’ll change some background colours and fonts, and add some elements there and there…

But my main plan is to get back to the drawing board as soon as possible and hopefully spend the least amount of time possible on maintenance after the blog is up and going.

Rejected comics was set up in 2009-10 as a portal for my webcomics. I used WordPress and a theme called Comicpress, the whole thing went rather well until a few weeks ago as I updated my comicpress installation to the new comic-easel. The transition didn’t go well for several reasons but mostly because my old wordpress installation had been set up as a multi site installation,  something that kind of messed up with comicpress theme, the problem grew worse with comic-easel. In the end I managed to make things work but at the price of losing a lot of functionality, after some times I decided it would be simpler and cleaner to just make a re-installation of the whole thing. So I backed up the files , wiped out the server and just reinstalled. It all went surprisingly well, but I have a lot of work before me to remake Rejectedcomics in all its glory!

the state of things for next weeks or so...

the state of things for next weeks or so…

I hope the new functionality offered by Comic Easel will allow me to publish my comics in a userfriendly and creative environment so that I can use more time drawing and less time mushing around in CSS code.

It is a rebirth for Rejected comics! Good luck to me!!!
